{ TRAVEL } TOP 5 things to do in DUBROVNIK

Hello Travelbugs!

We spoke of love in Prague & Paris. We spoke of unlimited joy in Madrid & Seville. We spoke of delicious food in Istanbul. But Dubrovnik in Croatia , is bewitching!

A lot like Prague , in that its history never left it and you still feel like living in the olden times. For me its difficult to pen down this post especially when it took some 4 months to just come out of what I call an adriatic hangover. The hundred thousand photographs I clicked here had me spellbound and dazed. There was no way I could use them in a single post.

So this post is only going to be about this city , where I spent 5 , yes 5 whole days . As always I didn't want it to be a touristy one, so I explored it at my own pace with tips from the locals. Here is my TOP 5.

1. WANDER AIMLESSLY IN OLD TOWN

If you land from Dubrovnik airport, you will likely be dropped at PILE gate beyond which no vehicles are allowed. So yes, you will have your first tryst with the stunning Old town when you drag your luggage through it - supposing you stay inside old town (Highly recommended). It is divine at sunrise hours, when the tourists don't crowd its glistening walkways and walls. Its a maze of stairs going up and down as you pass by a zillion eateries and local residences. Yes, the locals very much live here and I chose to stay in one of these inside old town. You can easily get lost in these narrow lanes surrounded by huge stone walls with the sun playing hide & seek and its fun. However , if you get lost in the night, just follow the Clock tower that you just saw at Stradun (the most famous street within old town). All the famous palaces are here , however there is nothing to see inside the palace. But you will love to be in the old city every sunrise and through the night. Stradun in the nights buzzes with local street performers and you can hear them play the best music ever and you wouldn't want to end the night. I did this for all the 4 nights and still craved for more! I will share more old town pics in an another blog which will be a style post

2. BANJE BEACH

The day you land make sure to hit the beach during sunset for the most amazing house music at BANJE BEACH CLUB that overlooks the banje beach. Pick up a glass of your favourite drink and maybe indulge in a Sunday like I did. See the adriatic sea light up in shades of gold along with the Stone walls. Such a sight to behold while the best party music blows into your ears. The next morning , be sure to come back right here around 9 to enjoy a dip in the water. The stony beach has very tiny stones which your feet can stand even without beach shoes. A swim at the beach is most relaxing especially as the depth of the water is barely 4 feet till a very long distance. This is the cleanest water you can find to swim or relax in.

3. VISIT THE MORNING MARKET

Every morning around 9am , the old town street turns into a local seller's haven. The tourists and locals alike shop here for fresh produce, special dubrovnik dry fruits, even locally made cosmetics- I bought this beauty balm from an old guy who claimed it will clear my skin of acne blemishes and Oh my God it did. I can't thank him enough. Do buy from him , if you find him there. I paid 7 Kuna (Approx 700 RS) for the balm called as Immortelle (L'Occitane makes something of this name) . You can also find cheap lavender room fresheners and related products. Its surprising to see that most sellers are very old . The young populace doesn't seem to participate here.

4. ENJOY THE VIEWS FROM DUBROVNIK WALLS

This is a no-brainer. Get your ticket for whichever time the sun favours. I would say something after 4pm or the first visit at 9am works best. Walking through the walls is a photographer's delight. You will be tired of clicking through the one hour of this trail over the old city. This is certainly a one time thing even if you stay here for 4 or more days. So make the most of that one hour you have, though it will tire you due to the sun. No food or water is allowed here so you need to refill it as you go .

5. EAT LOTS OF ICECREAM

This place is an ice-cream lover's heaven . Its cheap around 1-3 Kuna depending on the place and you get a huge scoop! Its certainly not gelato but is the best & creamiest ice cream you will ever have. My favourite flavours have been PISTA-CARAMEL-YOGURT. Oops and my mouth is watering while I write this. There are frozen yogurt shops too. Virgin Mint mojito is another favourite you will find in most ice-cream shops for 5-6 Kunas and they make it well. But have your fill of the best and cheapest icecreams within old town as food is a slightly difficult matter. Except for a yummy breakfast joint I had difficulty finding food. But I had the fresh goat cheese bruschetta every single morning and felt so good till 1pm, it was so filling. There was an Indian joint with amazing food but always booked so we had to do with takeaways or go real early.

You can also make a trip to the island of Lokrum, which is the forbidden island -the place where the Kings landing (Game of Thrones) has been shot. This island if you followed me on instagram scared me to no end. As they rightly say, the peacocks and rabbits besides other creatures have proclaimed this land and no human is allowed after sunset because he may not escape alive in the din of the crickets and tall dark trees covering the sky, besides abandoned walls in the middle. I just wanted to run away and we took the last boat out just at half sunset. I have never seen peacocks so brave and charging at humans that it seems unreal like you were Alice. I tried to swim in the waters but the slippery stony waterbed was too unwelcoming. SO yes, do go there around the same time i did- 5pm. And don't forget to read why this is a cursed island. Its for real!

Mumbai Diaries- The Forgotten

Remember , my last story on why I love Mumbai, Read here . I didn't know I will be doing a sequel to that story. Thanks to Jet Airways and me not sleeping through the 2hours. I was on a flight to Bangalore last week and read the inflight magazine where a particular article caught my eye. Featuring Mumbai 's oldest museum, looking splendid in a victorian style architecture- I couldn't believe I never knew about it. 9 years of being in this city and this thing was hidden from my gaze!  I felt excited there is a hidden gem , yet to be seen and decided to visit it as soon as the weekend begun!

So yesterday, if you followed me on Instastories, I walked into the premises at 11.30 am. Its funny but the entrance is through the Byculla Zoo, due to some restoration work. It took us ten mins to figure the entrance! On my way, I met a crazy bunch of monkeys, a blue bull , a deer, an ostrich and 2 mighty happy elephants (Surprise Surprise) I knew the day had begun well. The museum opens at 10am however there is a guided tour in English at 11.30 am free of cost. We were greeted by a smiling Vanessa who is an anthropology grad and is working with the museum .

Who built this museum?

This museum was established in 1855, as a repository for all the Indian art pieces that were sent all over the world to promote trade- an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort. Most pieces in this museum are replicas that were sent to the Great Exhibition in Paris in 1855. Formerly known as the Victoria and Albert museum, this museum was opened to public in 1872 ,  restored to its glory between 2003-2008 and renamed as Dr. Bhau Daji Lad museum in 1975 as he was one of the patrons responsible for its existence. He urged the citizens to donate for this museum and managed a sum of 1,16,141 to build this along with a contribution of 1,00,000 from the government.

Why should you visit the museum?

- If you want to discover everything MUMBAI- this is the place to be. Infact, every person who comes to Mumbai for the first time must consider a visit here  . The reason- ? This is a Mumbai "city" museum which was built in 1872 to showcase the cultural elements of Mumbai as well as the country and the origins of Mumbai from the 18th century. Besides displaying the indian artefacts , this museum houses the oldest maps of mumbai as prepared by the Portuguese , french to conquer the city. The city was names " BOMBAY" - meaning good bay by the Portuguese and was called Heptanasia (7 islands) before that. The name "Mumbai" comes from the goddess Mumba-devi whose sculpture is also displayed here .

-You are a major Art-Lover: This museum was built to stun the citizens and has the most beautiful victorian interiors in India. Besides the building being a sight to appreciate, it  houses the oldest Indian artefacts that were sent all over the world for the purpose of trade. Divided into 2 sections- One for industrial arts and other for decorative arts- Most of the industrial art artefacts are replicas of the pieces that were sent to Paris in 1855 exhibition of the British colonies. The idea behind these exhibitions was to promote trade by showcase of the work of their colonies and India had a bountiful to offer. Prince Albert was the pioneer of these exhibitions and the artefacts by Indian artisans were produced to suit the European shapes and forms - for example english tea-pots were made to suit the British style. The exhibits underwent changes since its establishment and the most unique collection is clay-models of how different sects and religion men and women dressed in Mumbai. I've never seen such an attempt anywhere else before. Its truly outstanding. I can go on and on about the collection, but then I want you to see it yourself and absorb the art.

How to get there?

You can take a taxi from wherever you are- this is the most convenient and please ask for Rani baug. If you take the train, you will need to take a taxi and the same goes for the bus.

Day Trip to COLMAR, FRANCE

Hello Guys!

Its been a lovely year so far as I have been traveling to my heart's content . You know it already, if you have been following my travels on Instagram. My base station was Geneva and I did my homework to plan day trips for weekends. Colmar features in the list of one of the most beautiful villages to see and pictures of this town over the internet had me determined.

A 4 hour train journey from Geneva , Colmar was blazing hot at 31 degrees Celsius on arrival at 10am in the month of September. I knew it would be hot but I had to see this place as I have already seen a bit of France in 2014 and didn't foresee going back to cover this town alone.

Colmar is beautiful with its pastel houses in partial woodwork from the 15th Century.  An abundance of colourful and dense blooms across the city and in the cute windows of the houses, makes every frame instagrammable, as I would like to call it.

However, there is not much to see beyond the houses and the Venice -like canals which the town-dwellers have smartly commercialised with boat trips. Colmar also boasts of a lot of Michelin star restaurants which are priced to drive a lot of us away . I instead decided to dine at a Lebanese joint which had very good Tripadvisor ratings. A family run restaurant ,it serves all-time favourites like Falafel, Fattayer, Hummus and the likes. There were 2 ladies making this in the kitchen so the service was very slow. However it tasted homely and was brimming with people in no time. Though it must be a long wait to get your food once the place is full. Half a day is enough to stroll along the quaint streets in Colmar and if you had to travel a long 4hours to be here in the heat , you may not feel it was worth it. However, if you are closer to this town and the weather is good,a half day trip to this picturesque town makes all the sense. After all, who doesn't like pictures straight from a fairytale?

Cutest souvenir shops

These narrow lanes in COLMAR are dollhouse heavens with these old houses intact & it made me wonder who lived here

My dress is from PLAVATE , a designer label that brings sustainable fashion to the connoisseurs. Handmade from Khadi, this is a delight in the summer weather wherever you are.
