Sailor Girl Ahoy!

Last summer, I got up at 6.30 am to reach this famous spot at Mumbai for a little shoot with my favorite girl behind the lens. At 7.30 the place was full with people , picnic baskets along. So when is it that a place in Mumbai can be without the crowd? The sun shone its nasty self harder and brighter with each passing minute. And then we knew we had to pose, click, scoot!

Sweaty, messy hair with all the salt in the air we took a rickshaw ride to our favorite hangout . A place where cupcakes, angry bird plum cakes and mini samosas tempt you to no limits! And we totally forgot about the pictures, as if that was an ordeal we were forced to go through! An year down, I get you the pictures. Enjoy!

Nautical Fashion 2012: Part 3 Colored denims

After Part1 and Part2 of the Nautical fashion series, here i bring you another style dedicated to the
trend that will never die.
Like i had said earlier, this is a tribute to Coco Chanel who introduced this trend for women .I will keep
this series going (as most of you requested) till her Birthday month i.e August .

To any element that wants some 'life & love' add a flower.
If stripes seem plain to you, add a floral touch, either with accessories or let the print do it for you!
Florals and stripes work beautifully in harmony. In fact, many fabric prints use this combination.
It combines the femininity of flowers with the smartness of stripes.
Add colored denims, and its a whole new happy outfit for you .
Since choosing stripes is easy, let us concentrate on the bottoms- the colored denims.

Colored denims- not your thing?

Most people avoid risking their wardrobe with a colored denim.
Luckily, people have now started embracing them ,thanks to their availability and people
like you and me who want this cheery & colorful addition.
One of the reasons why people avoid colored bottoms is because they feel there are limited ways
of styling one.
But believe me, once you start wearing them, you will realise they can be quite versatile.
Colored denims go very well with striped tops. Its either white or its stripes.
Although unlike your classical blue denims, colored denims have to be chosen with care.

How to chose the colored denim that suits you?

I'll save you the complex exercise of identifying your skintone etc.etc,to identify the right shades.
Instead, I will quote Leatrice Eiseman, author of The Color Answer Book ($10,amazon.com) and director of the Pantone Color Institute( Remember the post on Pantone color of the year, here ?), the international authority on color.
"Some colors work for all skin tones and hair colors, because they fall into the middle of the color spectrum, meaning they're not too warm or too cool," says Leatrice Eiseman

She lists the 4 universally flattering clothing colors.
And i believe these are the 4 colors that are the safest bet irrespective of your skin-tone!
Buy any denim from this color chart , and you my darlings, will rock the colored denim trend like you never did before!
4 women with different skin tones donning the 4 magic colors .

COLOR 1: Eggplant

COLOR 2: True Red

COLOR 3: Indian Teal

COLOR 4: Mellow Rose

Remember, pick any denim in one of these shades, and it will definitely be fail-safe.

                                                                Shadows overplay

MATCH-MAKER- Look how seamlessly patterns from the wall mosaic & my shirt match!

A little SUN here, a little SUN there, a little SUN everywhere!

Whoever said RED was loud?! Look which color screams here....!

The most refreshing Lemonade ever---especially after looking at the sun straight in its eye!
Dear Sun ,shine bright...Don't give me a tan in the night!

Red denims - Globus,           Rs.1200 (Last worn here.)
Top- Hill Road,                    Rs.200

Nautical fashion 2012 : Casual Chic

“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”

Nautical fashion is all over the runway this Spring/Summer.And why should it not be?
It has an interesting history of 150 years.I know you're curious, so read it all here.
This trend can be worn anyway- casual, formal or party-wear.
Its simple yet classy ,thanks to Coco Chanel who included the classic Breton stripes a.k.a Nautical stripes in female fashion for the first time in 1921 when women were trapped in corsets(imagines & laughs!). All the innovations in fashion by Coco Chanel , are those which women gladly accept today as if it was their second nature.Coco celebrates her Birthday in August, so i will try to highlight as many styles from her in some of my posts till August.A promise that is tough, but doable, what say?

Lets see how we can rock the casual nautical look.
  • The typical nautical look uses colors like RED,NAVY and White.
  • Prints include stripes which can be horizontal, vertical or slanting.
  • Other prints would signify all things that a sailor-man can be identified with like Anchors, stars,Compass, etc.
  • This look is so versatile it can be worn throughout the year in various fabrics according to the weather.
  • When accessorizing, think GOLD, as Gold combined with Reds and blues oozes Royal elegance.Think Prince William :)
  • Want to add some glamour?
    A
Red lipstick that suits your complexion will be your best bet.Make heads turn .Since the whole look is simplified, a red lip-color will only do justice to it even when you are out in the sunlight. The Nautical fashion files

Shoes-Bandra, Evil Eye Bracelet-gift from istanbul,Belt-Madame,Shirt,Bermuda-Janpath,Delhi,Can Pendant- Ebay HK,Retro Glares- Opp Palika Bazaar,Delhi.

I absolutely loved doing this shoot, thanks to the blazing sun and people looking as if there was some real shoot going on.Hehe.It was annoying, but i kept my cool most of the time, thinking of you guys :)
So, Does Nautical turn heads with its simplicity?
If ,yes, I would happily do a few more nautical looks.
OPEN for comments :)
Till next time...

Love,
Ila
